Embrace Your Inner Bear

Name: Ramon
Gender: Male
Age: 40
Location: Denver
Hi Dr. Dick. I have a lot of thick body hair and I spend a lot of time and money keeping it trimmed. I even use Azulene Oil, which allegedly slows the rate of hair growth. I don’t think it works although it makes my skin nice and soft. My question is: are there any products that work to slow, or stop hair grow? I would even consider hormonal treatment if it was safe. Thanks for your time. Your devoted fan; Ramon

Well, devoted fan Ramon, I’d be willing to bet that you’re gonna be as successful in finding a hair growth inhibitor as other men have been in finding a hair growth accelerator. Which, for all intents and purposes, means not successful at all. Sorry!

very hairy & hotAnd are you really serious about tampering with your natural hormonal balance for cosmetic purposes? My, my, my to what lengths we will go to compensate for, or alter something, we don’t like about ourselves. Just imagine how vulnerable this makes you to the unscrupulous purveyors of the proverbial snake oil? I always say; desperate men make desperately wrong decisions.

I don’t have any personal experience with any of the products you ask about. But I do have a whole lot of bear friends. So I quizzed them for some advice to pass on to you. Several of the men I spoke to confessed to having tried one or another non-prescription product for at least a short period of time. Some of my bear friends said they used one or another or several such products for a long enough time to say for certain that nothing they tried worked. No surprise there, I suppose.

Not one of my bear friends is currently experimenting with a hair growth-inhibiting product now. When asked why, every one of them said it was easier, cheaper, and less detrimental to their psyche to make peace with the fact that they are hairy guys…plain and simple.

What I did learn from my friends is that typically one uses a hair growth inhibitor after employing a method of hair removal (waxing, shaving, tweezing, etc.) in an attempt to slow the regrowth of the hair just removed. These products come as lotions, creams, or sprays and are applied directly to the area where the hair has been removed.

The claim is that the enzymes in many of these products can get into the hair follicle and affect the rate and texture of regrowth. Hair that does regrow is often finer, even if there’s not less of it. At least that’s the claim.hairy369

There are dozens of these over-the-counter products. And my research has also turned up a wealth of negative comments from disgruntled former users. Apparently some of these products are not only ineffective, but also dangerous. So beware!

Here’s a tip: if you, or anyone else in my audience is thinking about plunking down hard-earned money for a product of dubious worth. I suggest you do an online search using the name of the product or the company producing it, along with the word “scam” or “complaints.” In short order you will find what I found; there are a lot of very unhappy people who regret falling prey to the hype and being ripped off.

From what I can gather, electrolysis and laser hair removal are about the only permanent hair removal methods currently available. But even these techniques can be spotty, so to speak. Results can vary from person to person and there can even be regrowth in some cases.

In the end, there is but one undeniable fact: there is no published clinical data that backs up any claim that any of product or technique will slow or stop hair growth. With those odds against you, devoted fan Ramon, maybe it would be easier and way less expensive to simply embrace your inner bear.

Good luck

Dear Abby

Hey sex fans,

We have another video review lined up for today’s edition of Product Review Friday.

This is the second of three vids from the folks at The Romance Series.  You didn’t miss the first of these reviews, did you? Well not to worry if you did, because you can find it HERE.  And remember all our adult product reviews, going back 5 years, are archived at Dr Dick’s Sex Toy Reviews.

Let’s check in with Dr Dick Review Crew members, Kevin and Gina, to see what’s on their mind.

Dear Abby — $23.43

Gina & Kevin
Gina: “Kevin and I were reminiscing about the first review we did together. It was for the WE-vibe.  That was way back in August of 2008. I was shy and clueless about most sexual things. I was your average recovering Catholic girl, back then, who couldn’t wait to discover the big bad world out there.”
Kevin: “And I’m happy to report that I was the corrupting influence in her life. Although I must say she didn’t offer much resistance. Since that fateful We-vibe review, we’ve been all over the map, so to speak. We get such a hoot out of looking back on all the reviews we’ve done since then. You can find them HERE.”
Gina: “Yeah, it’s like looking at an old yearbook. I was such an innocent back then. Well, all that has changed. Now I’m as sexually adventurous as they come.”
Kevin: “But do you remember when you discovered my stash of porn movies on one of your first over-nights at my place? Do you remember your reaction?”
Gina: “Yes, I do. I was so disillusioned. I couldn’t believe you were into that stuff. I thought you were so cool and progressive; how could you watch porn? Back then I though all porn was disgusting and exploitative of women. I had so much to learn. Now I’m able to tell good porn from bad. And that’s why I jumped at the chance to review Dear Abby.”
Kevin: “She’s right! But I didn’t share Gina’s opinion when she brought home the DVD. The packaging looks exactly like what a major Hollywood studio would produce for a mainstream romantic comedy. I thought for certain this was going to be a dud. My taste in porn is way more edgy.”
Gina: “I knew he was going to say that. I immediately saw the disappointment in his eyes when I showed him the package. However, The Romance Series has a reputation for delivering great watchable sex along with really convincing non-sex performances by the same performers. I don’t find that too often, even in the porn that I’ve come to like very much.”
Kevin: “This is a great adult movie for couples. I hesitate to use the term ‘porn’, because it may turn off some in our audience who have yet to discover that sexually explicit movies, like Dear Abby, can be enjoyed without the guilt associated with watching mainstream porn. But just so you know, this is not soft-core sex. On the contrary; the sex is full-on and totally hot and sweaty. It is, however, of the vanilla variety. And there’s no flimsy storyline just to string together a bunch of unrelated sex scenes. No, this is a real movie movie.”
Gina: “Dear Abby is the story of a young couple, who have broken up, but eventually find their way back together. Ok, so I’ll admit the premise is pretty trite, but movie is not. There are four sex scenes featuring four very attractive couples. Unlike a lot of the porn I’ve seen, these couples seem to have real chemistry together. The camerawork is first-rate and the viewer is treated to an over all view of the couples enjoying themselves, not just fucking. There are no intense close-ups that make some porn really creepy. The sex is never hurried and the female characters are believable. In fact, they are presented as multidimensional people, not mindless sex dolls for the gratification of the guys. And there’s kissing, lots and lots of kissing.”
Kevin: “Both the guys and the gals are very attractive. And the blowjobs scenes are fantastic. Did I mention I LOVE blowjobs? But wait; are all the guys in porn these days shaving their pubes? Looks like it from this feature. Not one of the male performers has a bush. WTF?”
Gina: “Yeah, I wondered about that too. I like to see a man’s bush.”

Treasure Trove

Hey sex fans,

Another edition of Product Review Friday is coming your way. Today, besides having a bunch of great products to tell you about, we welcome a new manufacturer to our review family. I’m delighted to introduce you to System JO, the company behind the products we review for you today.

Dr Dick Review Crew members, Joy & Dixie and yours truly, me, Dr Dick, will do the honors

System JO Men Adrenaline Shaving Cream —— $11.42

Dr Dick
I have the pleasure of introducing you to a fantastic new shaving product from the good people at System JO. It’s their Adrenaline Shaving Cream for men. This stuff is so cool. It comes out of the handsomely designed plastic squeeze bottle with the pop-up dispenser in the lid, as a gel. At first I thought there was some mistake. The package says “cream”, but look, it’s actually a gel. I began to rub the droplet I dispensed in my left palm with the tip of my fingers in my right hand. Miraculously, the gel turns into this very fine slick cream. It is so slick and fine that I didn’t need to more than a few drops to make enough cream to cover my entire beard. Damn, this stuff is phenomenal, I thought to myself. But the proof of a good shave cream, at least to my mind, is in the shave itself, not merely in the consistency of the product.

As I discovered with my very first use that Adrenaline Shaving Cream excels in delivering a close comfortable shave. I have pretty sensitive skin, but I didn’t experience any irritation when using Adrenaline Shaving Cream and my skin felt fantastic after each use. Like I said, a small amount covers a large area and it coats my skin nicely. Unlike all those dense shaving foams out there , this product allows your razor will glide along effortlessly. It won’t clog your razor and it rinses off your razor easily.

If you’re prone to razor burn, ingrown hairs and/or shaving bumps Adrenaline Shaving Cream is the ideal product for you. It’s enhanced with aloe vera, but it also contains parabens and glycerin.  If you have concerns about these ingredients, you may need to look elsewhere.

I’m happy I got the unscented formula for review, because that would have been my preference. However it also comes in cucumber and musk scents. There is also a companion line of shave cream for women.

System JO Men Deodorant With Pheromone —— $13.80

Dr Dick
Next up is the Men Deodorant With Pheromone. This product comes in a distinctive roll-on container. Do you remember when most all deodorants came in roll-on form? I do and I really miss having them around. Nowadays, it’s mostly messy gels and chalky sticks that don’t appeal to me all that much. I also don’t like that almost all deodorants these days have an intense scent to them. If I want to wear a scent I’ll chose my own, thank you very much.

So right off the bat Men Deodorant With Pheromone has a lot of the competition beat. It is a very effective deodorant, by the way. And that’s what I judge a deodorant by; it’s effectiveness at preventing body odor.

Now, Men Deodorant With Pheromone is different from the other deodorants you’ll likely find on your local store’s shelves in as much as it contains Androstenl.  The System JO website says this is a potent natural attractant that provokes a strong sexual response. OK, but how does one go about testing such a thing, I asked myself.

I first used Men Deodorant With Pheromone after I had taken a shower one day. It applies very easily, there is no staining, no running, no dripping, no chalky mess and there’s no discernible scent. I left the bathroom to dress myself. I sat on the bed to put on my socks and suddenly my dog, Ginger, jumps up on the bed and makes a beeline for my armpits. She seemed to be unable to get enough of the thing she was trying to smell. I started to laugh and just as suddenly as she was on the bed, she was off. Once on the floor she vigorously shook her head, flapping here ears and then sneezed. This is very unusual behavior for her. But then again, she’s a hunting dog, so she’s all nose.

Clearly there was something in the Men Deodorant With Pheromone that I was unable to detect, but that Ginger was wild for. It had to be the Men Deodorant With Pheromone, because she’s never exhibited that kind of behavior with any other deodorant I’ve ever used.

System JO Mild Clitoral Gel —— $18.25
System JO Wild Clitoral Gel —— $19.12

Joy & Dixie
Joy: “We’re going to review two products at once. The reason for this is that both products are basically the same thing with one important difference.”
Dixie: “The two products are: System JO Mild Clitoral Gel and Wild Clitoral Gel. You can probably guess that the important difference that Joy mentioned is intensity of the stimulation. By the way they also have ‘Light’ and an ‘Atomic’ version of the same product.”
Joy: “Both of the products boost sensation when applied to your clit. The active ingredient appears to be peppermint; so at least it a natural product. I’m very reluctant to apply something full of chemicals to my joy-spot. The peppermint also gives the products a mild minty fragrance.”
Dixie: “Joy’s joy-spot! Isn’t she clever? I guess I’d have to call mine; Dixie’s delicious-spot. Whatever you call your clit this Clitoral Gel will get your motor purrin’ real nice. The object, of course is to get the one that works best for you. We both tried each product. We both began by rubbing a couple of drops of the Mild Clitoral Gel directly to our clits. Then we waited for it to produce the promised warming and cooling sensation that tingles. Nothing much happened that either Joy or I could notice. We both looked at each other and kind of sighed. Are our clits that desensitized, we wondered? Could be, we guessed.”
Joy: “So we tried the Wild Clitoral Gel next. We applied the same amount in the same way as the first test. This time, BINGO! We both could feel the sensations within a minute, both warming and cooling. The peppermint was doing its thing. None of this is overwhelming in any sense of the word. Nor is it a particularly long lasting effect, which is a good thing. I wouldn’t want to be feeing this kind of sensation for too long.”
Dixie: “Both the Mild Clitoral Gel and Wild Clitoral Gel are silicone-based, which makes for a very nice silky texture, much like a silicone-based lube. This, however, brings one word of warning to mind. If you are using either of these products with a silicone toy, like a vibrator, be sure to sheath your toy in a condom first. There’s minimal packaging, which I really appreciate. The small tube containing the gel is inside a simple paper package that is recyclable.”

WET and Wonderful

Hey sex fans!

Today’s Product Review Friday brings you the balance of our reviews of the WET products we received earlier in the year.  As you recall, we reviewed a whole bunch of their products back in May. You can see the Dr Dick Review Crew comments HERE!

I’m delighted to have the honor of introducing you to the remaining three WET products, two of which are not personal lubes.  I love it that they are branching out.

WET Gellee —— $8.74

Dr Dick
Water-based personal lubes are notorious for drying out too quickly, at least as they compare to silicone-based lubes. And when a lube dries out during use, it tend to become sticky. I hate when that happens! Problem is if you’re using a condom and/or playing with a fine silicone toy; ya can’t use a silicone-based lube.

Water-based personal lubes are also less viscous then their silicone-based cousins. Less viscosity means the lube will be runny and less likely to stay in place. This can be frustrating, messy and wasteful.

But wait! Our friends at WET have come up with a very nice solution to these nagging problems. They call their product — WET Gellee. This is a new product for WET. They’ve successfully made a hypoallergenic gel-type water-based lube that is silky smooth; more long-lasting; doesn’t get sticky; way more viscous than the traditional runny liquid formula so it stays put longer; and there’s less of a mess when using it. WET Gellee isn’t as likely to drip all over your bedding, furniture, carpet or car upholstery. Wait, car upholstery? Come on; let’s face it, not all fucking happens in the bedroom. And WET Gellee is non-staining, which makes it perfect for all those non-traditional sex situations…the dining room table, pool side, Aunt Millie’s powder room?

I was happy to receive the non-scented original formula of WET Gellee. They also have a Kiwi Strawberry flavor, which would have been way over the top for me. I prefer my lube to be flavorless, thank you very much. However, there is a hint of sweetness, even with this non-scented original formula. But these formulas are completely sugar-free, which means most people can use them internally without reservation. But, if you are allergic to sucralose, you’ll want to look elsewhere for your lube.

Inttimo Tranquility Aromatherapy —— $12.17

Dr Dick
I’ve been an avid practitioner of massage and bodywork for ages. I guess you could say I know my way around a massage table. However, finding just the right massage oil or lotion is not nearly as easy as kneading out the knots in someone’s body.

I’ve tried dozens and dozens of different products over the years and while I’m particularly fond of the Vitamin E and Aloe Vera-based massage lotion that I whip up in my own kitchen, I am always on the lookout for an exceptionally fine massage oil as a compliment to the lotion I use.

I am happy to announce that, thanks to my friends at WET, I now have what I’ve been searching for — Inttimo Tranquility Aromatherapy.  It is the ideal massage oil to use along side of my special recipe massage lotion. So yay for that!

Inttimo Tranquility is another new product from the masterminds at WET. It’s a very light, pleasantly fragranced massage oil that can also be used as a bath oil. I am so glad to see them branch out from their more familiar line of personal lubricants.

Inttimo Tranquility is long-lasting, but never greasy. It has a nice, but not overpowering scent. This one contains bergamot and ginger; aromas to balance, instill composure and relax the body. But there are three other aromas to choose from. And a little goes a long way. It feels beautifully on my hands and on my client’s skin.

It comes in a nicely shaped plastic bottle. I got the 4oz size for review, but it also comes in an 8oz size. Despite the attractive bottle I wound up transferring the contents to an empty pump bottle I had on hand. The screw top of the original container is not convenient. It’s a bother to have to open and close it with each application, but you’d be foolish not to. The bottle could easily tip and spill and that would make a huge mess. If I had one suggestion to make to the manufacturer it would be consider adding a pump to the packaging.

Again, I loved the consistency of Inttimo Tranquility; not too thin, not so thick, it’s just right. It distributes on the body very evenly and it easily absorbs into the skin. There’s no residue to stain either my massage linens or my client’s clothing.

Inttimo Tranquility contains almond oil, aloe vera juice, vitamin E and A, hemp seed oil, avocado oil, kukul nut oil, and sunflower oil. It’s very good for your skin. It’s great for erotic massage too. But it’s not recommended for use with a condom.

Inttimo Shave Cream —— $9.99

Dr Dick
I have the pleasure of introducing you to my new product of choice in the shaving department. Say hello to Inttimo Shave Cream, another innovative product from the good folks at WET. I mean it just figures that a company known for their premium personal lubes would bring to market a superior shaving cream. All I gotta say is; what took you so long?

If you’re prone to razor burn, ingrown hairs and/or shaving bumps Inttimo Shave Cream is the ideal product for you. Now I know that WET created this formula to enhance and safeguard intimate shaves, like bikini shaves, legs, underarms and manscaping, but is it’s as practical, if not more so, for every day facial shaving.

It’s enhanced with aloe vera, vitamin E and jojoba oil; it doesn’t contain parabens, but there is glycerin. I have pretty sensitive skin, but I didn’t experience any irritation when using Inttimo Shave Cream and my skin fells fantastic after each use. A small amount covers a large area and coats the skin nicely. I really like it because it’s not dense like shaving foam. This is a good thing because my razor just glides along, it didn’t clog my razor and it rinses off my razor easily.

I’m happy I got the unscented formula for review, but for those who want/need some fragrance they also have a Forbidden Fruit formula. (I wonder, what fruit is forbidden these days?)

I really like the plastic squeeze tube container. It has a flip-up top that is very convenient and you don’t have to worry about rust stains that so frequently accompany traditional metal shaving cream cans.

Slip Slidin’ Away

Three lucky members of the Dr Dick Review Crew have been having a gay old time with the new signature line of personal lubricants.

These particular lubes come from the good folks at Fleshlight and FleshJack.

We’re all pretty ga-ga about the fleshlight products here at Dr Dick’s Sex Toy Reviews.  (Check out my review of the granddaddy of male masturbation toys HERE!)

So it comes as no surprise that these wizards have developed their own line of water-based lubes to go with their fine products, or that can be used on their own.

Today we welcome a new Review Crew Member, Madora.  She joins Ken and Dixie, who introduce us to the new lubes.

Fleshlube Elements Pack $24.95large_1441

This Package Includes:
– 1 4oz. Bottle of Fleshlube Water
– 1 4oz. Bottle of Fleshlube Fire
– 1 4oz. Bottle of Fleshlube Ice

Fleshlube WATER

Madora

What can I say?  There’s nothing I don’t love about Fleshlube WATER by the makers of the Fleshlight.  It’s super smooth, weightless, light, it’s water based so it’s safe to use with my favorite silicone vibes.  One of my favorite parts about it is that you use a little and then you just completely forget you’re using lube, it’s so natural feeling.

I’m not into putting tons of chemicals on my private parts so the fact that it’s got only five ingredients makes me terribly happy.  The main ingredient is Purified water and it actually contains honeysuckle extract.  Is it just me, or is honeysuckle an incredibly sexy word?  Either way it fits right in.fleshlube_water_2

So far I’ve only used it solo cause, well, I’m single right now and I’m the only one I love enough to get that close to my honeypot.  Feel the love.

Fleshlube WATER is also hypoallergenic so it’s great for people with sensitive skin and it comes in a recyclable plastic bottle with a simple sleek design.  If Fleshlube WATER Lubricant were the only lube I ever used for the rest of my life, I’d be totally fine with that.

Now here’s Dixie!

Fleshlube ICE

Dixie
Thanks Madora, and welcome to the Review Crew!

I have to agree with Madora about the attributes of Fleshlube ICE Lubricant; like the WATER lube that she used, mine is also silky smooth and lightweight.  And of course, it’s water based so it’s safe to use with my silicone toys and latex condoms. So hurray for that!  The “ice” or cooling effect is very nice too.  Nothing overpowering, it’s more of a gentle sensation.fleshlube_ice_2

I took a slightly different tact with my review.  I decided to dig deeper into the ingredients of this product.  Madora mentioned honeysuckle extract.  My lube also has honeysuckle extract.  I had never heard of this additive before, so I thought I’d look that up on the interweb tubes.  I discovered that in traditional Chinese medicine, honeysuckle is used to clear heat and toxins from the body.  Recent studies in China found honeysuckle to be effective in reducing inflammation, fever, and infection.  I think that’s really interesting.

Fleshlube ICE also contains glycerin.  This might be a concern to some.  Even though the vast majority of skin care, hair care and other products marketed as “moisturizing”, “hydrating” or “replenishing” use glycerin as one of their main active ingredients. Glycerin draws moisture from the lower layers of the skin and holds it on the surface.  So some claim that basically you rob Peter to pay Paul, as it were

The ICE or cooling agent is: Menthyl Lactate, which is a cooling agent derived from an ester of menthol and lactic acid.  An ester, I discovered, is a compound formed from alcohol and an acid by eliminating the water.  I’m like getting this chemistry lesson along with my pleasuring.

Now here’s Ken!

Fleshlube FIRE

Ken

I have the Fleshlube FIRE lube.  I think it’s great.  It does have a nice warming component to it that kicked up my jerk-off session a notch.  It felt really good on my dick and balls, but also on my butthole.  I’m not big on insertions of any sort.  I know, I know, I’m missing out…maybe one of these days.  But still I do like a nice rim job.  And since I can’t rim myself, this Fleshlube FIRE lubricant is the next best thing when I’m by myself.fleshlube_fire_2

I was all excited about turning my partner, Denise, on to Fleshlube FIRE, but she wasn’t nearly as enthusiastic as I was.  She has really sensitive skin.  I mean you can just look at her crooked and she breaks out with the heebee jeebees.

Once she had a look at the ingredients she nixed the idea of use on or with her.  She was happy to see the lube was paraben-free.  Apparently parabens can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels, personal lubricants, topical pharmaceuticals and toothpaste. They are also used as food additives in some products.

Denise said that parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers. It can also adversely affect the secretion of testosterone and the function of the male reproductive system. That pretty much sold me on avoiding parabens in the future, that’s for damn sure.

The next thing that concerned Denise was the additive:  Propylene Glycol.  I guess this is something like Glycerin, because it works as a hydrating factor, but it too draws moisture from the lower part of the skin to the surface giving only the impression of moisturizing (rather than actually doing it!).
